Albert C. Bush

Albert C. Bush

June 14, 2020

Albert C. “Bert” Bush, age 98, of Black River Falls peacefully passed away on June 14, 2020, at the Pine View Nursing Home where he had resided the past five months. Bert was born April 21, 1922 in Lime Springs, Iowa to Elmer and Alma (Lietz) Bush. He married Clara Olson on January 9, 1943 in Taylor, WI. They shared over 73 years together, worked hard, and always enjoyed gatherings of an ever-growing family and many friends.

For many years, Bert and Clara owned and operated a dairy farm west of Black River Falls. In 1975 they sold it to their son and daughter-in-law. While farming, he was a stockholder in W.H. Lien, Inc. in Hixton, WI, operated the DX gas station in Black River Falls for a short time, and started “Bush Equipment,” selling used farm equipment. In 1981, he sold the equipment business, built one of the first rental storage buildings in Black River Falls and built a used car sales business. After a few years he sold those businesses, but continued to buy and sell most anything, and he and Clara spent winters in Mission, TX. When the “snowbird” days were done, he bought used boats and spent winters fixing them to sell in the spring.

Dad wasn’t one to sit still and needed very little sleep. He loved to buy and sell and would take most anything in trade, including horses or sheep. You never knew what would be at home when you got there. You also never knew what would be gone because he got the right price for it. He loved auctions, going to many, and having quite a few, too. When in Texas, he loved trips into Mexico and getting great bargains from the vendors. In all of his dealings, he never wrote a number down or owned a calculator. He could do all the math in his head and remembered every number. There really wasn’t anything he couldn’t figure out how to do or fix. He was smart, strong, ambitious, hard-working, demanding, and a perfectionist. He knew every road in Jackson County and liked to ride around to see how the crops were doing. He always had a new car amongst his vehicles, and even the new car would go into the fields for a closer look. He liked to snowmobile, bowl, play cards, shake dice, and in his later years he enjoyed gambling at the casino. He looked forward to time visiting, fishing, and going for rides with Don Lemerand, who was like a son to him. Throughout his many businesses and adventures, he loved and cared for his family and many friends, always there to help when help was needed.

Bert is survived by six daughters: Virginia Young, Joyce (Cary) Arndt, Lorene Breit, Jill (John) Higgins, Christie (Rich) Wirz, Jayne (Kevin) Foster; one son, Bert E. (Lucille); 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara, three sisters, two brothers, and sons-in- law, Larry Young and Harold Breit.
