Duane George Smalley, 84, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 18, 2020, of congestive heart failure. He was born July 19, 1935 in Lake Holcombe, WI to George and Margaret (Larson) Smalley. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, James and Clara Larson. Upon graduation from Holcombe High School, he attended Minnesota Bible College in 1954.

Duane married Arla F. Schmidt on April 8, 1956 in Marion, MN. They had three sons and two daughters. They divorced on January 10, 1969. Other marriages include Florence (Sedivy) Smalley, July 1981 - July 1998 (died of cancer), and Teresa Ann (Spotts) Smalley, May 28, 2006 - until her recent death August 12, 2019.

Duane was employed in Eau Claire by Farmers Store Company, 1956 – 1963; and National Presto Industries, 1966 – 1976, making the 105mm shells for the Vietnam War. He was a CNA for 12 years at Chippewa County and Chippewa Manor Nursing Homes. For 30+ years, Duane was a State Licensed Security Officer, working the last 10 years of that time period as a Site Supervisor for 3M in Eau Claire, WI.

Duane is survived by his three sons and two daughters: James (Cindy) Smalley, Berkeley Springs, W VA; Bruce (Janet) Smalley, Greeley, CO; Russ (Marianne) Smalley, O’Fallon, IL; Brenda (Dave) Robinson, White Bear Lake, MN; Rita (Tim) VanLoon, Winona, MN; 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren; sisters, Sharon Dehnke, Osseo, WI; Char (Randy) Henry, Lewisville, TX; two step-children, Kevin (Chris) Spotts, MI; Kathy Owen, MI; and numerous caring nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Teresa Ann; sister, Lorraine Birk; wife, Florence Smalley; his first wife and mother to his children, Arla F. Wood; brothers in law, Roger Dehnke, Fred Birk; and step son, Richard Spotts.

The family would like to thank the wonderful, caring staffs at Oakwood Health Services in Altoona, WI, and St. Croix Hospice – who went above and beyond in caring for Duane. Your kindness will always be remembered and we can’t thank you enough. We’d also like to thank Joanne Busack of Marine Credit Union for all her help these past few months; as well as Chippewa Valley Cremation Services for their kindness in assisting the family. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
