Rolf enlisted in the Navy at 17 and served in World War II and the Korean War. While in the service he married Velma Bradshaw and they raised their four children on Lake Wissota before divorcing in 1965.

Rolf is survived by his children, Mike Chance, Woodstock NY; Kathleen (Terrence) King, Chippewa Falls WI; Donna (Dave Kawa) Chance, Janesville WI; and Steve Chance, Denver CO; grandchildren, Brandon Chance, Rebecca Chance, Brian (MJ Cienski) Chance, Keith (Darra) King, Russell King, Jordan King, Kent King, Quinn (Halley Lauer) Arntsen, and Rose Arntsen; great- grandchildren Lucas Chance, Aiden Chance, Sophia King, Francis King, Orion Way, Olin Arntsen and Jasper Arntsen; his siblings Bill, Rick, and Alison; his niece Bonnie Berg; and cousins Margo Holen Dineen and Kent Holen, Jr.

Rolf was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Alfred, Jr.

Rolf attended business college in Minnesota. He loved his career and won many awards as a salesman for International Shoe Company. He enjoyed deer and bird hunting in Wisconsin and surrounding states and fishing trips to Canada. He loved a good laugh and was quick with his "homemade jokes". In later years, Rolf enjoyed trips to casinos and eating at the buffets. He was a fan of classic movies, loved watching professional golf, but above all, Rolf loved his Minnesota Vikings!

Rolf treasured Irvine Park and Zoo and delighted in acting as an unofficial ambassador, talking with the visitors and answering kids' questions. He established an endowment fund for the care and maintenance of the monkeys at Irvine Zoo. In addition to his financial gifts, Rolf contributed considerable time to zoo-related volunteer efforts.
