Donald M. Hammer

July 13, 2019

Donald M. Hammer, age 68, of Chippewa Falls, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Eau Claire, WI.

Don was born on June 7, 1951 in Superior, WI the son of Herbert and Joanne (Johnson) Hammer. He graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1970. He worked as a Millwright and Welder for Jeno’s Pizza in Duluth, MN and later with Pillsbury Company.

Don was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 16 and due to the disease; in 1989 he suffered his first heart attack at the age of 38, which lead to him becoming disabled and ended his successful career. He used his self taught woodworking skills to create items for sale to keep active, and create a bit more income. Unfortunately in 2001, he had second major heart attacks, which eventually lead to a stroke when he was in surgery for an artificial heart. He lived on an LVAD pump for 9 months of his life in a hospital waiting for a heart donor. In August of 2002, he was blessed with a very strong heart of a precious donor, that gave him almost 17 more years – but not without many other organ complications. Don moved to Chippewa Falls in 2003 and had numerous hospital stays, ER visits that were usually a result of his extremely fragile diabetes. Eventually this disease took over most of his organs and caused him to live in a skilled nursing facility for the past 2 years of his life. Through all of his physical problems and extensive medical care, Don never complained, he always smiled and accepted his disabilities as the cards he was dealt with. He was known as the “energizer bunny” to all who knew him, because he always continued as if his future was never ending.

Don is survived by his sister, Kathy Hall of Chippewa Falls; brother, Doug Hammer of Superior; 2 Aunts, Cherie (Ryan) Jost, South Range, Ann (Art) Rasmussen, Superior and 1 Uncle, Jerry (Dorothy) Johnson, Superior;  3 children, Jason&  Matthew Hammer and Bobbi Coppock all of Michigan; 6 grandsons, Logan Hammer & Carter Hammer, Mason Hammer , Keegan , Caden , and Cole Davis. He will also be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews, Travis Hall, Jackie Schult, Chad & Mandy Hammer, Angel, Vicki Jo and Rick Hammer. He was lovingly referred to as “Uncle Don” by many others. He leaves us all with a smile and a void in our hearts.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert & Joanne; his brother, Richard; grandparents, Verner & Eunice Johnson, Wilbur & Ida Hammer.

A private family service will be held at a later date in Superior, WI.

  • Leslie "Rusty" Buchanan Sorry for your loss, my big memory of Don was in 6th grade at Nelson Dewey school when I got to school one morning. I went to sit at my desk when the class snake started coming out thru the ink well. We found each other on Facebook and had a good laugh over that. Then we lost touch again, but I've never forgotten him.
