Charles D. Baird

September 23, 2018

Charles “Charlie” D. Baird, age 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 23, 2018, surrounded by his family in his home at Eau Claire, WI, after a year-long battle with colon cancer.

Charles was born on March 23, 1944, in Williford, AR, to Irene and Chester Baird.  Charles attended Williford High School.  After his high school graduation he attended several institutions of higher education including Harding University in Searcy, AR (B.A. in Accountancy, 1966), Memphis State University (Master of Business Administration, 1967), and University of Missouri Columbia (ABD degree in Accountancy, 1971).

He spent his professional life dedicated to teaching accounting.  He taught at Mankato State University (5 years), University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (17 years), and at the University of Wisconsin Stout (18 years).  Charlie loved teaching and advising.  He cared deeply about his students and was willing to spend numerous hours helping them master accounting concepts.  He loved sharing jokes and cartoons in the classroom to help illustrate his lessons.  Among his colleagues, he was even  known to pull occasional pranks.  He retired from teaching in January 2017 with Emeritus Status.

In 1971, he started his own private accounting business and helped numerous business owners and individuals with tax returns, tax planning, and consulting over the years.

Charlie also worked with the Small Business Development Center.  He helped numerous entrepreneurs and business owners create business plans that were launched in Eau Claire and surrounding areas.  Seven of those plans he helped prepare went on to become winners in the “Creating Your Own Business” contest.

Charlie was a faithful member of the Eau Claire Church of Christ. He was a charter member, and served as treasurer for the Flaming Pine Christian Youth Camp for several years.   Additionally, Charlie enjoyed the outdoors; especially fishing, camping, and gardening.  Other hobbies included traveling with his family, collecting antiques, and coaching Little League.  He loved to watch baseball when the Milwaukee Brewers or the St. Louis Cardinals played which were his two favorite teams.  He loved and collected all things chocolate and his grandchildren affectionately knew him as “Grandpa Chocolate.”

Charles is survived by his wife Kaye of 51 years, his children Sheree Baird of Little Rock, AR and Dan (Genevieve) Baird of Searcy, AR, his brother CC (Pat) Baird of Williford, AR, four grandchildren, Eden, Zane, Kellen, and Ike, and many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Chester and Irene Baird.

The Baird family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the Eau Claire Mayo Cancer Center and Hospice staff for their care and support.

Condolences

  • Kathy Cochran Kaye,
I am heartbroken to hear of Charlie's passing! May God bless you and his family as you learn to cope without him in this world. He brightened many days for me at UW-Stout and always provided support when I really needed it. I will never forget the many kindnesses he showed me over the years. I have learned that it's true....only the good die young and Charlie was still young. Just LOOK at that twinkle in his eye!

  • Bill Kryshak Charlie was my trusted colleague at Stout for all his years here and more importantly he was my friend. We greeted each other every day when we arrived and we said goodbye every day as we left with multiple conversations in between. Every member of our department had such great respect for Charlie. His kindness for others, his sense of humor and his dedication to his profession will not be forgotten by those of us fortunate enough to have known him.

I am not sure there was ever a day that family was not part of our discussion. Charlie loved his family so very much and was so proud to update me on what Sheree, Dan and the grandchildren were doing when he and Kay would come back from their trips south or when the kids would venture north.

Kay, our prayers are with you and the family.

  • Stan Johnson Kay,

I am beyond sadden by Charlie's passing. He was a true professional and treasured colleague. Beyond that he was a great friend. I could always depend on Charlie to give me sage advice.

He beyond a doubt will live in the lives of the many students he taught and mentored over his distinguished career.

He certainly will live on in my memory for many reasons but above all as one of the nicest people I ever knew.

  • Nancy Flyen Walters Dear Kay and family,

My heart fell when I learned of Charlie’s passing. He was one of my favorite colleagues and he was also a friend. He mentored and helped me so much to become the prof I was. My heart goes out to you in the loss of your husband, father and grandchildren. His love for you was so obvious to me. May the Lord bless you and keep you in his arms during this time of great sorrow. I didn’t know the two of you still lived in Eau Claire or I would have tried to connect. Hugs and much love to all. Nancy
