EDWARD A. POND - 1930-2018

Dr. Edward A. Pond, age 88, of Eau Claire, WI died on May 5, 2018 at home due to complications of heart disease.

On January 30, 1930, Ed was born at home (delivered by his father when the doctor was stranded by a snowstorm) in Shakopee MN.  He was the seventh of nine children.  Ed grew up on the family farm and graduated from Shakopee high school in 1947.  He served in the army in Germany during the Korean War where he was assigned as a chaplain's assistant.

In June of 1954 he married Barbara Belmont in Bloomington, MN.  They had four beautiful daughters.  Their marriage was a long one; they were together for 64 years.  He attended Northwestern College in Minneapolis, and obtained Masters and PhD degrees from the University of MN. He taught at Northwestern College for 2 years and in 1966 moved to Eau Claire, WI to teach in the history department at UW-Eau Claire.  His major was ancient history and during his career he traveled rather extensively, including two trips to Israel for archeological digs.  He also spent time in Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Greece, and Rome.  He thoroughly enjoyed teaching and did so for 35 years, retiring in 1998.

Ed enjoyed reading, travel, spending time with family, friends, and cherished pets.  He always made time to take his grandchildren camping.  He was a quiet, loving, contemplative man, admired by many.   His ancestors, Samuel and Gideon Pond, came to MN as missionaries, and Ed honored their memory by his faithful church attendance and strong spiritual beliefs.  For 10 years he pastored a very small (path to the bath) Baptist church in Rusk, WI on weekends during his teaching years.  For many, many years he taught adult Sunday school classes in several churches.

Ed is survived by his wife Barbara of Eau Claire; four children, Pamela (Tim Meinke) of Two Harbors MN, Ruth Pond of Milwaukee WI, Sharon (Jim Roach) of Menomonie WI and Rebecca (Karl Plesums) of Spooner, WI.  He had 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by a sister, Martha Dorn of Prior Lake, MN and a brother, Allan Pond of Lakeville, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lero and Donald Pond; six brothers and sisters, Marcus, Vernon, LeRoy, Phillip, Esther and Lero Irene; and one grandson, Joe Roach.

A Memorial Service and luncheon will be held at Hope United Methodist Church, 2233 Golf Rd., Eau Claire at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18,2018.   Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
