Walter Hawkins Jr.

July 12, 2017

Walter “Walt” Hawkins, 70, died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.

Walt is survived by his wife, Linda (Warner) Hawkins; children, Collin (Carmen) and Chelsea Hawkins; and twin 18-month-old grandchildren, Giovanna and Arlo Hawkins. He is preceded in death by his mother, Celestine (Boucher) Hawkins and father, Walter Hawkins.

Walt was born in Merced, CA on March 11, 1947 to parents Walter and Sally. Growing up on a ranch in the San Joaquin Valley as the youngest of three boys, Walt spent many days learning to cook from his mother and getting into trouble with friends. After a stint in the military which took him to Asia and Europe, Walt moved to Port Orford, Oregon, where he met his future wife, Linda. The couple moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where they were married on July 12, 1975. Walt subsequently earned his associates degree in civil engineering from Mid-state Technical College. In 1980, he welcomed his son Collin, in 1987 his daughter Chelsea, and in 2016 his granddaughter Giovanna and grandson Arlo. He was a wonderful, loving partner to Linda. His children remember him as a compassionate, caring father who could make anyone laugh. He was also an exceedingly proud grandfather whose patience was endless.

Walt was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan from childhood, even during the bleak period of the 1980s. He was also an avid fisherman, and could often be found baiting a hook in any season. There is little doubt that walleyes, small mouth bass, crappies, and northern from Alma to Minoqua are breathing a sigh of relief after his passing.

There will be a small, private ceremony in August. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Western Dairyland’s homeless program online at:

  • Jacque Hogan Collin and Carmen,
I am so sorry to hear about Walt's passing and I do truly believe all the fish in the region are finally relaxing; you always told me how much your dad loved the water and fishing. I know you will keep him alive in spirit through memories and stories for both Arlo and GiGi. You are in my thoughts -love ya!
