Carl "George" Markgren Jr.

Carl "George" Markgren Jr.

July 10, 2017

Carl George Markgren, 90, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2017, at the Chippewa Manor in Chippewa Falls.

George was born in Cumberland, WI, on January 21, 1927, the son of Carl and Violetta (Lundstrom) Markgren. He was the third of seven children. In 1945, he was recruited to join the Army. He attended basic training in Illinois, spent six months of special training in the Philippines, and was transferred to Kobe, Japan. He never saw combat, but, as he would explain, “They surrendered because they must have known I was coming.” When he returned to the States, he attended the University of Wisconsin – Superior, and Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a practicing chiropractor in Eau Claire before opening his office in Osseo – a fixture on Hwy. 10 – where he practiced for more than thirty years. An advocate for holistic and preventative medicine, Dr. George helped countless patients and championed the benefits of chiropractic care.

He met his wife in 1957 when she was visiting the U.S. from Sweden. Even though they didn’t speak the same language, he convinced her - with tenacity and humor - to take a chance on him. They were married in 1959. As anyone who knows them will tell you, their love story is one for the ages. As it turns out, his ancestors were from the same small regions of Källbomark and Drängsmark in Sweden as her family. They were meant to be.

George is survived by his loving wife, Anette; sons, Brian (Jenny) Markgren and Gary (Carmen) Markgren; daughter, Susanne (Matt) Haberling; ten grandchildren, Janelle (Gonzalo Guajardo) Markgren, Sara (Josh) Bronstad, Joseph, Kayla, Kara, Tori, Elisha, Violette, Cecylia, and Boden; sister, Grace (Sig) Jacobson; sisters-in-law, Judy Markgren and Vanja (Don) Larson, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Earl, and Paul; sisters, Marian and Athlee; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Sharon; and brothers-in-law George Lindberg and Reynold Erickson.

George was known for his wry sense of humor, calm demeanor, and auspicious luck – or perhaps just a clever guardian angel - that kept major injury at bay for ninety adventurous years. Throughout his life, he enjoyed scuba diving, fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with family. He also had a strong affinity for his Willys Army Jeep, his power tools, and his gin martinis.

An amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and doctor, he will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew him. And we will miss him terribly.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m.  Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church, 50351 Harmony Street, with Pastor Terry Lorenz officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

A special thank you goes to the nurses and personnel of the Chippewa Manor for the special care George received during his stay.

Chippewa Valley Cremation Services is serving the family.

11 a.m. until the time of service at church.

1 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church in Osseo.
