Brian L. Thill

June 14, 2017

Brian L. Thill, 74, of rural Fall Creek, WI, took God’s hand to be reunited with his wife, Darlene, on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, just days after their 50th wedding anniversary.  He was surrounded by his loving family while under the care of MCHS Hospice and the The Neighbors of Dunn County.

He was born April 27, 1943, the son of Frank and Doris (Olson) Thill of Barron, WI.  Brian grew up and graduated high school in Barron.  Immediately following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1961 to 1965 as an Aviation Ordinance Crewman 3rd Class.  While in the Navy, Brian saw the world with deployments to Turkey, France, Italy, Sicily, Greece, Spain, Virgin Islands, Cuba, and bases in the U.S.

On May 27, 1967, Brian married Darlene J. Hopke in Barron, WI.  After living a short time in Rice Lake, they moved to Eau Claire where they raised two children, Terri and Jeff.

Brian worked at Uniroyal in Eau Claire until the plant closing and then transferred to B.F. Goodrich Tire Plant in Fort Wayne, IN in 1991.  He retired from B.F. Goodrich in 1998 after 30 years with the company, and the couple immediately returned to the Eau Claire area.  Upon their return, Brian worked as a custodian for the Eau Claire School District until 2005, when he retired for a second time. During his retirement, he worked part time as a custodian for Mount Washington Community Based Residential Facility from 2005 to 2013.

Among his many favorite pastimes were spending time fishing, being with his family, enjoying the peace and serenity of being at the lake and working on his yard which his neighbors claimed was the “nicest in Eau Claire County”.  If he wasn’t out slowly working a bait for crappies or bass, he could often be found relaxing in a lawn chair sipping on a Diet Coke chatting with family and friends.  Brian was full of life providing strong and nurturing care to his family, putting others before himself, throughout his life.  His strength and loving care was never greater than when he provided the love of his life with the care she needed during her final years with us.  His strength, compassion, humor, laughter, love, and presence will be cherished by all who knew him.

Survivors include his mother Doris of Barron; daughter Terri of Eau Claire; and son Jeff (Kari) of Lino Lakes, MN.  He is survived by four grandsons, Connor, Dylan, and Austin Gardow and Benjamin Thill and granddaughter, Abby Thill.  He is also survived by his sister Colleen Carter and many nieces and nephews.

Brian was preceded in death by his grandparents; father; and wife, Darlene.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Hope Lutheran Church, 2226 Eddy Lane, Eau Claire with Pastor Phillip Ruge-Jones officiating. Burial with military honors will be private at a later date at Northern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI.  Visitation will be held Monday from 4-7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.
