Mark A. Schnack

June 1, 2017

Mark Schnack, a life-long resident of the Eau Claire area, died Thursday the 1st of June, 2017 at Clearwater Care in Eau Claire, WI. Mark passed away after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born on May 1, 1961 in Albert Lea, MN, the son of Dr. Larry and Carol (Hansen) Schnack of Eau Claire, WI. He attended Eau Claire schools and graduated from Memorial High School in 1979 where he captained the high school basketball team that went to the State tournament his Senior year. Following school, he held various jobs including farming, construction, and sales. Most recently he worked for Ayres & Associates selling sand and gravel products. Mark’s sales positions best showcased his talents and affection for people.

Outside of work he loved playing golf, and socializing with his friends, and spending time with his family. He loved his family very much. He had a wonderful smile that could light up a room and had a knack for making people feel special, especially children.

Mark is survived by his wife of seven years, Bonnie (Buttenhoff) Schnack of Altoona, his parents, his sister Lorrie Snowden (Ken) of Harlysville, PA, his brother Kevin (fiancé Valerie Depke) of Eau Claire, WI, and his sister Rochelle DeVore (Steve) of Cincinnati, OH. He also leaves behind his children, Larry (fiancé Jessah Smalley) and Marcus, of Eau Claire, WI and his grandchildren, Jax Schnack, Alana Larson and Tyler Larson. In addition, Mark is survived by several aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces.

His daughter, Victoria, proceeded him in death in 2003.

Mark was a regular at our house, playing basketball and shooting the breeze. What a treasure it was to know you all, and Mark personified kindness, gentleness and sincerity. We are so sorry for your loss.

  • Kevin Weaver I will miss Mark as well. My thoughts go back to that State Tournament team. I remember it well because I played along side Mark. If it wasn't for his tenacity and clutch free throw shooting we never would have made it to State. He was a tough competitor and elevated each of us to give it all we had, to not back down, no matter the circumstance. Back then we were expected to win, however we were short on experience that year and started the season on a losing note. I remember vividly Coach imploring us to play better. That's when Mark spoke up, asking Coach "can we keep our nice leather basketballs if we get to State?" I think Mark was the only team mate that thought we had a chance to get to Madison. I still have that basketball.

I pray for peace for all of us that knew Mark. It's always sad when a friend leaves this world way to early, I also pray for comfort for his family. I know I take comfort from these fond memories that I still cherish.
